Laundry Detergent Packets Highly Toxic, Dangerous for All Ages
Liquid laundry detergent packets have already been identified as hazardous to young children who like to put objects in their mouths. However, a recent study has found that they can also be dangerous for adults, especially older adults, in large part due to their highly toxic nature.
The study looked at over 36,000 calls to poison control centers for laundry detergent packet exposure over a span of 3 years. Though most exposures were in children under the age of six, exposures in older children, teens, and adults actually increased over the study period.
There were also 9 fatalities reported during this time period, all of which occurred in adults – and 7 out of 9 were adults over age 70. Researchers also highlighted the fact that liquid detergent packets are very toxic, even more so than traditional liquid or powder detergents, likely due to the type of ingredients they contain.
“Many families don’t realize how toxic these highly concentrated laundry detergent packets can be,” said Dr. Christopher Gaw, senior study author. “If you have young children or vulnerable adults in your home, using traditional laundry detergents is a safer alternative.”
Plant-Based Diet Could Lower COVID Risk Nearly 40%
Eating more plant-based meals could lower the risk of developing COVID-19 as compared to eating meat more than three times a week, a new study has found. Overall, both vegetarians and “flexitarians” had a 39% lower COVID risk than regular meat eaters.
The study was an observational one involving 702 adults – 372 who had COVID infections and 330 who didn't. They were divided into groups of either plant-based or omnivorous diets based on dietary information received from questionnaires.
Along with finding that those who ate more plant foods were less likely to get COVID than meat eaters, the researchers also noted that past studies have shown that a higher intake of meat is linked to a greater risk of multiple chronic diseases, including cardiometabolic disorders and COVID-19 complications.
On the flip side: “Plant-based dietary patterns are rich in antioxidants, phytosterols, and polyphenols, which positively affect several cell types implicated in immune function and exhibit direct antiviral properties,” said Julio Cesar Acosta-Navarro, MD, PhD, lead study author.

5 Surprising Health Benefits of Parsley
Though once regarded as a mere garnish, parsley is now becoming recognized as the tasty, health-boosting herb it truly is. Alongside a variety of other nutrients, parsley contains an antioxidant called apigenin that has shown anti-cancer properties. Just one tablespoon of the herb also has about 70% of the daily value (DV) for vitamin K, a top bone-helping nutrient, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, which both promote healthy eyes and vision. Financial Stress May Be Worst for Biological Health
Stress is known to have a negative effect on biological health, particularly because it impacts the immune, nervous, and endocrine systems. However, a recent study found that some types of stress might be worse than others. Overall, each separate stressor experienced was linked to a 19% greater chance of being at high risk for health problems 4 years later – except for financial stress, which was linked to a 59% increased likelihood of being in the high-risk group. Half-Cardio, Half-Strength Training Potent Against Heart Disease
Exercise is undoubtedly good for heart health, and aerobic exercise (like walking or swimming) is already proven to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. But according to a recent study, a routine made up of half cardio and half strength training could be even better. It was found to have similar benefits for heart health as aerobic exercise only, while also increasing both aerobic fitness and muscular strength – something aerobic exercise alone did not do. (More)
High Antioxidant Intake May Reduce the Risk of Low Back Pain
Antioxidants are now recognized as key for many different aspects of health, and some new research indicates that they may also impact pain – specifically low back pain, something millions of people suffer from. Overall, those with the highest antioxidant intake in the study were anywhere from 12-20% less likely to suffer from low back pain than those with the lowest intake. However, these results still need to be confirmed in more robust studies. (More)
Modern Food Is Likely Getting Less Nutritious
We all know that processed food is typically low in nutrients, but some data suggests that even the whole fruits and vegetables we eat might also be getting less nutritious. It's difficult to determine the extent to which this is happening due to different analysis methods over time, but micronutrients like iron, zinc, and vitamins appear to be decreasing in produce, possibly due to modern farming methods that harm soil health. Wheat has also shown a significant decrease in nutritional value since 1968, which could stem from the introduction of new high-yielding varieties. (More)

There are over 650 muscles in the human body, and the fastest one is found in the eye. Known as the orbicularis oculi, this muscle can contract in as little as 0.1 seconds, allowing you to blink – something that happens approximately 19,200 times every day.
